Grotesque nouveau

Here are some rough scans of some new grotesques. I now have access to a studio and have gone back to making grotesques again. I assure that there will be a burst of new grotesques to come! In the latest grotesques, I'm starting to look more at 'grotesque body', the inner and the outer as well as grotesques in cave paintings.

Paint pot faces

Paint pot faces! I have been drawing and painting as well as photographing over this summer. This is accidental thing which has turned into a little mini project. I've been decorating and doodling my paint pot with the excess paint and ink used for my storyboards and set designs on the grotesque. Many of these faces are grotesque in appereance and others are imaginary.

More urban blight!

More photographs based on the themes of edgelands, surface and urban botnay.

Edgelands and urban walks

I've put the studio work aside for and have started to take the role of a flâneur with a camera, leaving the places that are part of my daily rountial life, to photograph what I  happen to encounter or what catches my attention. Prior to taking these snapshots, I had been reading JG Ballard's Crash. From reading Crash, I've regained a strong interest in the urban enviorment and the machinery. This new interest in the urban enviorment has fabricated into recording edgelands. I had heard about the concept of edgelands from Paul Farley's and Michael Symmons Roberts' book the Edgelands. The definition of an Edgeland is a place which is between or shares the characteristics of the urban and rural, it is a marginal or in a transition between the two. Places like car parks, airports, wastelands, retail parks or an industrial estates are all things which fit into this concept of the edgelands. These photographs have all been taken from the edgelands I have visitied.  The photographs show the combinition of organic and man-made matter. I have merged  nature and the city together. I would definitely like to elaborate more on this idea. I'm thinking of taking this idea further. I can see this idea been taken into a  seires of  photographs or large scale landscape drawings, a  film or ausing these phots for a storyboard for a new side project continuing  my grotesque work, working with theme of the grotesque and the city.

Cough by Ghost outfit

Here is a video which I did for a new upcoming local band; Ghost outfit and their track cough. I've known the band (Jack and Mike) for some years now and they are probably one of the most talented and dedicated people to their art that I know! So it was a great privilege to finally collabrate with them! The video is a short clip of hand painted animation, done on 8mm film. The concept behind this video was to produce a sensation, which related to the clattered harsh noises and instrumental cough that can be heard from this track. The editing and production of this video is very raw and lo fi, just like the band's sound. You can see Cough by Ghost outfit here, on this link from you tube:

Chocolate and Gloop

I've just been playing around with mixing food and paint together to further ideas for my next still life shoot.

Monday, 17 January 2011

I'm utterly memorized by this film! It's very mythical and glamourous work by Anger that has been done simplistically and with lots of bright colours and textures. This film reminds of sketch drawing how its very immediate and open ended in narrative. It was originally meant for a longer film. The film protrays the ennui and extravagence a Hollywood actress from the late 40s. I'm thinking of taking inspiration from the bright colours, sparkly textures and garments from Puce moment for some of the next studio/construct shoots. I want to also plan my own 'sketch film', this film might relate to recent work or might become a seperate project, but  it needs more thought. Puce moment is definitely worth a watch and if you don't like it you'll enjoy its great sound track!

Set designs

With having no acess to a studio, I've been spending the short winter days designing stage sets and jotting ideas down for a future shoot.  These are some drawings from a sketchbook of some ideas for backgrounds. I'm thinking a lots of glossy texture for background again, but having a messy lump of paint and matter, contained in house/cube like structure in the centre of the background.

Test shots

These photographs are early test shots and experiements, which I did weeks before making and photographing my constructed scene. I played around with making my crass puppets out of objects and materials that were lying around the house. In the image below, and having never worked in a photographic studio before, I was taking test photographs to get my head around the space, all the different ways of lighting a object and the mechanics of using a meduim format camera.

Work in progress....

This is the first image of what is hopefully going to be part of series images looking into social restraint, total freedom, headonism and decadence. I'm exploring this idea of the 'construct' and still life in my work, I've been making happening like disposable enviroments and objects in a studio, which I then photograph to make a document. This current on going project pays homage and has hugely been inspired by American underground cinema, The films of Kenneth Anger and Jack Smith especially, Kurt Kren films, Camp sensibility and the french Symbolism and Decadence.

Flaming Creatures (Jack Smith)

Here I have posted some stills and the first part to Jack smith's Flaming creatures. There are many things I like about this film. First, I love Smiths slap dash care free appoarch to shooting this film. I also love the films biazarre content. The film has no real sense of a narrative, but there is sensous and a powerful dialogue to the film. Flaming creatures shows us an enacted sexual orgy taking place between androgynes, a dance scene and television commerical for lipstick. I love this film's whole aesthetic! worth a see! I'm sure that this film will remain to be a big insipration for my work.

Otto Muehl and Kurt Kren: Mama Papa

I had just came across this film by sheer conincidence. I saw this on a recorded television series from the 90s called midnight underground, which screened and commented on underground and artist films. MaMa Papa by Otto Muehl and Kurt Kren is very vuglar, brash and extreme in its content, but it's constrastably attractive and exiciting at the same time. This quick film is documentry footage of some of Muehls perormances. The film is a extentsion peice to the performances. The footage has been put together very rapidly, darting from one squence to another, destorying the structure of narrative but creating a very senstional feeling to the film. Muehl is seen decorated and decorating and his naked models in food and blood and other horrid nasty things (which i'm not going to list.).  In this film, I like the Muehls use of the body as material or as a canvas  and how food and other substances are subsituted for paint. The film is worth a watch, but warn anyone thats its quite intense, and  its definitely not for the faint hearted!
